Jarabacoa is just over two hours from the capital, making it one of the easiest mountain getaways in the country. Whether you go by your own car, bus, or guagua, this guide shows you how much it costs, how long it takes, and what to expect from each option.
Choose based on your budget and time
Own or rental car
The most flexible option: you can stop along the way and move freely in Jarabacoa. Includes toll on Autopista Duarte (~RD$120 per segment). Ideal if traveling in a group or with luggage.
Bus (Caribe Tours)
Fixed departures several times a day from the 27 de Febrero terminal. Comfortable, air-conditioned, and no need to drive on mountain roads yourself.
Guagua / budget shared taxi
The most economical option, but requires a transfer in La Vega and has no fixed schedule. Good for travelers with free time and a tight budget.
Organized tour
Includes transport and activities (rivers, waterfalls, mountains) in a single package. Ideal if you don't want to plan anything and prefer someone else to handle the logistics.
Autopista Duarte: the fastest and safest way
Take Autopista Duarte to La Vega and then the turnoff toward Jarabacoa (Jarabacoa–La Vega Road). It's the fastest route, best signposted, and with fewer sharp curves. There's a toll on the initial segment.
A toll-free alternative but slower, with more truck traffic and mountain curves. Only recommended if you're deliberately avoiding tolls or if the highway is closed.
Practical tips for the trip
Leave early
Avoid leaving after 4pm if driving your own car — mountain curves are harder at night.
Bring cash
The Autopista Duarte toll and many guaguas only accept cash in Dominican pesos.

Jarabacoa is in the mountains — nights are noticeably cooler than in Santo Domingo.
